Oh My Goddess!
A tear-jerker to the max!

Oh My Goddess! is a thoroughly enjoyable 5-part series. Fun characters… cute gals… lucky guy… well known plot line (a la “I Dream of Genie”)… flawless anime style! The producers pulled out all the stops in creating an unabashedly melodramatic comedy tear-jerker.

Keichi Morisato is sitting alone in his college dorm room watching the phone for his buddies and decides to order take-out noodles. He makes a few calls and has no luck. He makes one more try but dials a “wrong number”… the Goddess Help Line. Before he can hang up… his own, personal goddess,  Belldandy, materializes beside him. She promises him one wish. He wishes for her to be with him forever… and the wish is granted! Well… you know how it goes, from there…

They are kicked out of the dorm and so take up residence in an old temple. (Belldandy has “permission” to live there!) Keichi’s little sister, Megumi, moves in. That’s it for episode 1: "Moonlight and Cherry Blossoms". In future episodes we meet Belldandy’s big sister, Urd (age maybe 24?), and her little sister, Skuld (age maybe 14?). All three sisters are very high fashion. The artists who drew these characters are masters of flowing fabrics and swirling hair.  Mix the wonderful art, the charming music, the bright colors and the cute characters… and you have the recepie for this heart-warming series.

Episode 4 brings up a situation that may split up the household. Up until now we have been shown nothing but the growing bonds between the characters… but now we see that their happiness may not last! Because of a long-forgotten promise… a broken promise… Belldandy is “recalled” home. This can’t be happening… Masaka! It takes all of episode 5 to straighten things out.

There is a huge following of this series on the web. Search for any of the characters and you will find a wealth of input from all over the globe. Aside from the video series… there are collectibles and CD soundtracks. There are posters and tee-shirts, video games and pencils, stickers, dolls, model kits and playing cards, comic books and manga, and… another series, too!  In Japan there is a TV series… Adventures of the Mini Goddesses .

In The Mini Goddesses, the three sisters are only about four inches tall and live in a full-size house. They have a rascally rat, Ganja, for a stooge and accomplice. These Mini Goddesses episodes are about seven minutes long…  they are actually Saturday morning cartoon show faire. Put three of them together and sprinkle in some commercials and you will have a half-hour program.

My Mini Goddesses came to me as Japanese language with Chinese subtitles on VCD’s (video computer discs) suitable for playing on my home computer. I find it interesting that the Chinese are watching the Japanese anime titles on home computers.

Rumor has it that the names of the three goddesses come from Norse mythology. Belldandy is as close as the Japanese could come to a comfortable pronunciation of the actual German name for the goddess of the “present”. Urd is the goddess of the “past” and Skuld is the “future”. I enjoy the fact that these names are not easily pronounced in Japanese… in which there are no “L” sounds and  each word (each syllable, except N) ends with a vowel. Urd becomes Urd-O, Skuld… Skuld-O, and, of course Berru-dandy (with a roll of the r). Belldandy’s costume is sort of Russain/German in design… and the music often has a Swiss music box character… very nice.
