Anime Cels...
You will love these things!
Each cel is a unique bit of fine art. I enjoy the bright color, the hand-painted artistry, and the fact that I get to own an actual piece of the anime. They are so collectible and (in my collection, at least) they are so cute! I keep my favorites on display to give me a lift as I head off to work each day.
There are a great many cels available... and each is unique. It takes about 15,000 frames to make a single half-hour episode ... 20 minutes of the new animation ... then the commercial breaks, and stock opening and closing animations fill out the balance of the half-hour. Many studios cut their work load by shooting the same cel twice or even three times in a row before moving on to the next cel. This cuts the number of cels required (and cuts the smoothness of the animation!) so that only 6 or 10 thousand cels are required for the 20 minute animation. That number is further reduced by the use of "stills" and pan shots where a single cel may be on-screen for 5 or 20 seconds ... thereby cutting the need for a huge number of cels. Watch "Ranma 1/2" or "Inuyasha" to see a maximum use of this cost cutting technique.
Next time you watch an Anime... try to keep an eye out for "good cels"... you may be surprised at how many scenes would not make good cels to have in your collection... backs of heads, tiny figures too far away, nothing going on, close-ups of odd things... What makes a good cel is a view of a major figure or an image of high-style that exemplifies the attitude of the series. Many of the cels in my collection are just such scenes.
